Presidential Dollars were launched in 2007 as a new series of circulating golden dollar coins. The series was an attempt to replicate the success of the prior 50 State Quarters program and create a dollar coin that would be used in circulation. Four different designs will be released each year, featuring the Presidents of the United States in the order served. The series is currently scheduled to run until at least 2016.

This coin video provides a look at all of the Presidential Dollars released so far, along with some interesting insights and information for coin collectors.

Topics covered include:

  • Legislative background of the Presidential Dollar
  • Presidential Dollar Coin Act of 2005
  • Coin specifications and composition
  • Artists who have worked on the series
  • Obverse designs, reverse designs, and edge lettering
  • Missing edge lettering errors
  • Suggestions for collecting Presidential Dollars

The US Mint does not do anything without telling people or being told to by congress. The appearance of the motto on the obverse of the Presidential Dollar coin was mandated by H.R.2764 in the 110th Congress. It was enacted as part of Public Law 110-161 in December 2007. It did not go into effect in 2008 because it was too late to change the dies for 2008, so it went into affect in 2009. For more on this, read http://coinsblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/motto-to-be-moved-on-dollar-coins.html

For more on why the Mint just doesn’t do things without a law telling them what to do, see http://coinsblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/read-blog-before-buying-coin-or-writing.html then see http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=7745

    Scott,

You are absolutely correct. The law requiring the change of the motto location is covered in the video around the 6 minute mark. I realize that one of the references to the motto location change in the video made it seem different.

    Charles,

Unfortunately, the Historical Signature Sets were discontinued along with a slew of other US Mint products.

The US Mint announced some big cuts to their product line in late 2008. See this related post:
